In July 2000 a group of nineteen people spent many hours creating a web site that explored some of the texts important to life in South Korea. Their time was short, thus their web site just a beginning. But, it is critical to make a beginning to examine how beliefs, values, identities, and relationships in culture are constructed through the texts we use in our social interactions.

The ideas underlying these inquiries into the texts that construct culture draw from a definition of literacy as socially constructed practices, an understanding of pedagogy as inquiry into the ongoing symbolic negotiation of culture, and a belief that school activities should construct a participatory critical democracy.
