GAME PLAN: DAY THREE

Overview:

-introduce newspapers as a form of persuasion

-lesson on newspapers

-watch first section of The Wave movie

Objectives:

-to examine the language of persuasion in newspapers

-to draw upon students' prior knowledge and experiences with newspapers

-to introduce the movie as an alternative text

Rationale:

By making students aware of the persuasion found in their everyday lives, it is our hope that students will begin to question and critically evaluate messages that are often presented as fact, rather than as persuasion. We plan on watching the film The Wave in order to provide an alternative text for the students to compare and contrast the methods and themes emphasized in both texts.

Resources:

-playbooks

-Movie: The Wave

Layout and Activities:

-pre-game warm-up: What audience would be persuaded by the editorial you brought into class? Who would not be persuaded? Why? On a separate piece of paper please write who is in your new Team Huddle; turn this in at the end of class. (5 min)

-lesson on Newspapers as Persuasion: Different sections and parts of a newspaper. The editorials the students brought in will be used as examples as well as our example of the Exxon Oil spill. The lesson will focus on certain aspects of newspapers; they will include: placements of stories, length of stories, headlines, and word choices. See Appendix B (20 min)

-show clip of The Wave (15) min

-students should take notes on the film-- questions to ponder:

-what do you consider to be some important moments of persuasion?

-how is the language significant?

-wrap-up lesson (5 min)

-explain homework

-give students time to assign roles for Literature Circles

Practice on your own:

Students will write a one page freewrite comparing and contrasting the movie and the novel. Compare their pespective, or vision, of the novel with what they saw in the film.

Students will also read chapters 1-3 of The Wave and bring in a quote they find significant or with which they can personally relate.
