GAME PLAN: DAY NINE
Overview:
-watch Frank Capra's Prelude to War
-critically analyze the persuasive messages and type of speech
Objectives:
-to have students recognize diverse purposes of media
-to have students evaluate the power media has to create opinions
-to have students examine various questions (see layout and activities for more details) of the content of film
Rationale:
The purpose of this film is to help students understand and evaluate the purpose of media as propaganda. By becoming more familiar with the media and critical thinking skills, the students will be able to interpret and evaluate films of propaganda in a media literate manner.

Layout and Activities:
-pre-game warm-up: Evaluate the current status of your newspaper. What can be done to make it more persuasive yet "truthful." What needs to be done in order to finish it for Show and Tell Day? (5 min)
-introduction of film See Appendix F (5 min)
-persuasive elements students should watch for:
-who produced the film
-from whose point of view is the film made?
-what is the historical context?
-how was the language used to persuade?
-what other elements were used for persuasion?
-what was the goal of the film?
-were they successful in meeting their goals?
-watch Prelude to War (30 min)
-wrap-up lesson (5 min)
-explain homework
Practice on your own:
Students will be expected to have a written evaluation of Prelude to War, due on Day Eleven. Students should address what make the film persuasive and what elements were used. Feel free to use the pre-generated questions as a starting base for your essay.
Literature Circle role sheets will be due on Day Ten.
