RATIONALE BEHIND EVALUATION

Because our view of learning is multi-faceted, we feel that it is necessary to have various forms of evaluation in our classroom. The diverse forms of evaluation will allow students to maximize on their strengths, while also challenging them to grow in areas of weakness. The class is centered around the season flashback folder that serves as a collection of the students development and academic growth. We feel that this is a key component in our classroom because it reflects the complexity of the learning process and allows students to communicate their achievement in a variety of ways. The season flashback folders will be cumulative throughout the entire school year. By the end of the year students will not only be able to chart their growth, but will be able to pick and choose the pieces that they feel best demonstrate their achievement.

When putting their season flashback folder together for the nine weeks, students will be able to draw from various projects and activities that have been assessed throughout the nine weeks; these activities will include their newspapers, persuasive speeches, multi-media presentations, and various writing samples. These diverse activities will challenge students to grow in a variety of areas.

We also feel that student input is essential to the process of learning and evaluation. It is for this reason that we will encourage students to be active not only in their own learning, but also in their own evaluation. This will be done through self-assessment and also through reflections on their work and progress.

As teachers we feel that it is necessary to be flexible. This is important in the classroom because it allows one to better value student input and the direction they are heading. Being flexible allows the teacher to maximize on the students' interests, their learning, and their growth. It is for this reason that this outline for the evaluation of students is not set in stone. We encourage students to voice their concerns and also to give recommendations on how they feel it can be improved.
