GAME PLAN: DAY EIGHT

Overview:

-continue class discussion of The Wave

-read Maya Angleou's "Alone" as a supplementary text, make a connection between the poem's meaning and Laurie Sanders from the readings on Day Seven

-give students time to work on newspaper decisions in their Team Huddles

Objectives:

-to enhance students readings of The Wave by using supplementary texts

-to give students the opportunity to find and generate other connecting texts

-to allow students to begin to generate ideas for their newspaper projects

Rationale:

By exploring supplementary texts with themes found in our primary text, we hope to expand and encourage the growth of our students use of connections in the classroom.

Layout and Activities:

-pre-game warm-up: Brainstorm a list of supplementary texts (music, movies, poems, books) that have the same themes of The Wave (5 min)

-Team Time (25 min)

-examine Maya Angelou's poem "Alone" See Appendix E

-questions to facilitate discussion

-can you make connections between this poem and the reading from last night?

-what character does this most remind you of?

-have you ever had an experience like this in your life? (teachers will first share personal examples)

-compare and contrast the two texts in terms of meaning and both authors' use of language as persuasion

-Team Huddles (10 min)

-groups brainstorm on ideas to include in their newspaper

-Team Huddles should begin to delegate responsibilities

-wrap-up lesson (5 min)

-explain homework

-allow students to assign roles for Literature Circles

Practice on your own:

Students will be asked to create a freewrite on the connections they found or did not find in Maya Angelou's poem "Alone."

Please read chapters 15-17 for Friday and prepare Literature Circle role sheets
