How is growing up for a woman represented in books and media? In the book In Country, Samantha has many experiences in the summer after her graduation that are part of her maturing. What does she learn and how does it compare with how growing up is experienced in different cultures?

Heading: coming of age through pop music Date: 2002-04-12 14:21 From: Jessica Seraphin Team Biz, consisting of Mariel Drumheller, Biz Engelbret, Katie Maher, and Jess Seraphin, is exploring Samantha's as well as the youth of today's coming of age as viewed through pop music. Through the video we produced, we examined pop music's effects on American youth as they try to solidify threir identities during adolescence. As we read, pop music had an affect on Sam's way of thinking and looking at the world around her. When she browsed her mother's record collection, she reflected on what her mother's lfe used to be and listened to the music to try to find out what her mother was feeling and how she felt about life in a small town.

Heading: RE: coming of age through pop music Date: 2002-04-15 19:15 From: Mariel Drumheller Pop music was very important to sam, but I think it is much more important now to adolescent girls. Pop musicans, especially female musicians mostly fit into one stereotype. They are all skinny, they don't wear a lot of clothes, and they do not say the most intellegent things. They sing songs about losing love, trying to find love, and being in love all themes that focus around men. Well there is a lot more to women then love and men and it is important for girls who are coming of age to understand that their lives do not revolve around love and men. There is more to them than that!

The lyrics and messages are often powerful enough to make people, including teenagers, think in a new or different way. Also, the musicians and artists are often very influential, as teenagers attempt to imitate them through dress, style or actions. Popular rock stars are viewed as role models, no matter if they dress provocatively, have hateful or degrading messages, or commit crimes. Because they are famous and recognized worldwide, they are seen as perfect, and this can often have negative effects as teens try to act in these ways. We demonstrated some of these images in our video.

Heading: Women lives after the vietnam war Date: 2002-04-19 09:51 From: Sunyoung Park I am interested in women lives after the war. I've tried to search such a information in the web. However it was a little bit difficult to look for thoes pictures or stories. The reason I am interested in this issue is beacuse of my grandmother passed away in 1997. Actually, she experenced Korean war from 1950 to 1953. It was the time when her marriage life was started. With the begining of Korean war, my grandfather joined Korean army and passed away in 1953. Can you imagine how my grandmother's life was changed? She had to support her little son and her mother-in-law as family head. Her role was left only as a mother and daughter-in-law. She was not a woman anymore in her left life. Actually, I didn't feel much about her devotional life when I was younger. But I could be aware that how much sad her life was before she passed away. She told her visiting friend that she had oppertunities to remarry but couldn't do it because she had a poor son. Trough my grandmother's life I can't help thinking where her life was. There will be many women like my granmother. I think vietnam women after the war are the same situation. Who has to be responsible for thier lives? Where was their lives as women? And Why was the war occupied and for whom?
