Adolescent Literature

When one hears the word oppression it tends to be linked with the racial, sexual, and gender issues in the past. We talk of the oppression of the slaves in the 1800's, the oppression of women, and the oppression of cultural groups during that same period, or of the anti-semantic situations of the Holocaust.

However, oppression is an everday fact of life to millions of people in the modern world; you may even be oppressed by someone you love. You may be oppressed and not realize it. In some way or another, many people's personal and social freedoms are being threatened each and everyday.

The main character in our shared novel, Ellen Foster , is an excellent example of what it means to be oppressed, not just by her natural family, but by society in general.

In each of our independent novels we have seen this common thread of oppression linking each novel with one common theme: people are still living in oppression.
