Hypermedia in Critical Literacy/Pedagogy

Possible Products (Software):

· Hypertext document linking different types of media texts (StorySpace)

· Quicktime movie-- edited video, scanned images, audio music or voice-over, with transitions (Adobe Premiere)

· Simltaneous text/image with sound (StorySpace or Web pages)

· World Wide Web documents (Web editors or word processors)

· Digitized sounds (SoundEdit 16), video (Premiere), or images (Photoshop)

Generative Processes:

· linking and juxtaposing builds intertexts of knowledge

· intertext building produces as well as exposes ideas for critique

· connect cultural texts that have personal relevance

· a way of sequencing and organizing knowledge

· a way of publishing knowledge

· creates an experience or an affective event of knowing

· allows for exploring how texts work on an audience

· represent meaning and be able to look back on the nature of those representations (meta-interpretation)

Theoretical Framework for Teaching:

· Knowledge is process rather than artifact (produce not consume)

· Knowledge is social-- always constructed in community

· Knowledge is the collaborative building and critique of intertexts

· Texts/Contexts/Intertexts construct possible social relationships and identities

· Texts are engaged within cultural practices-- literacy positions us

· In common practice, texts contain meaning narrowed by intertext redundancies

· Texts can be framed as invitations to juxtapose other texts to shift and layer possible meanings through building multiple simultaneous intertexts
