Exploring Film-Exposing Culture-Expanding Literacy

Movies offer a window into what is important to us in our lives. From all the movies we have seen, we have our favorites. This web site explores our favorites. We were forced to select an excerpt from a favorite film to share with the class. We responded to each clip. We isolated still frames in each clip that seemed to carry significant meaning. We wrote paragraphs that summarized our class response to each movie. Each film clip became a means to an end.

As we weave our way through all of these found and created texts, we hope to articulate what we learned about our cultural beliefs and our literacy activities. Through the experience of this web site and our explanations, you may find relevance for this hypermedia activity in school classrooms.

Means to an End

In three small groups, we reorganized the still frames from the eight films, and added our own soundtrack to create our own short flicks. We wrote paragraphs in our small groups to describe the experience of creating our own movies. These short movies present our ideas about the connections across the movies. But these connections also represent the values and beliefs important to us in our culture; they mark our ends to the meaning, at least for the time being.

Ends to the Meaning
